Forty quilts from the Winterthur collection will make a stop in Wisconsin, starting later this month. American Quilts, part of a traveling exhibition organized by the Winterthur Museum, will be at the Milwaukee Art Museum May 22 through September 6.
In 2008, I saw this collection in St. Louis. A short while later, I visited Quilt National: The Best of Contemporary Quilts at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. In combination, the shows were like a timeline of technology and social commentary told through fabric and stitching.
For a bit of the flavor of the Winterthur collection, here's a post from Barbara Brackman's Material Culture.
